5 Tips For Traveling With Your Pet This Summer

by Ali Oaks | June 21, 2023

Who doesn't love summer vacation? The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and there's nothing better than spending some time with your loved ones - including your furry friends!

If you plan to have your pet tag along for your summer travel plans, it can make the logistics a bit more complicated than just going by yourself. Don't stress; we’re here to help!

Your friends at GlobalVetLink have compiled the top tips for traveling with your dog or cat this summer!

1. Be sure that your pet is healthy enough to travel!

It’s important to get the ‘okay’ from your veterinarian to ensure that your dog or cat isn’t due for any vaccinations, treatments, or tests.

It's also a great time to check in on your pet’s electronic microchip while visiting your veterinarian - in case the unthinkable happens, and your pup or kitten gets lost during the trip! Have your veterinarian double-check that they can locate the chip and that your contact information is up-to-date. If your dog does not have a microchip implanted, talk to your veterinarian about getting an ISO microchip. Better safe than sorry!

2. Get the right pet travel certifications and documents!

Domestic travel, regardless of the mode of transportation, is governed by state regulations. Many states require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) from a licensed and accredited veterinarian for interstate travel.

Rabies vaccination certificates are required by most states for travel. International travel will have more requirements, as these are set by the destination country.

GlobalVetLink brings you an easy solution for obtaining pet travel documents to make traveling with your dog or cat easy! Use FlyWithMyPet.com’s simple information collector to enter your travel information and it will provide a list of pet travel requirements, including the documents your pet needs to travel with you. After reviewing the travel requirements, use the Find-A-Vet tool to locate a veterinary clinic in your area who can assist you with the required exams, treatments, and documents

3. Practice!

The best way to prepare for travel is to practice well ahead of time. Try taking your pet on short trips around the block in the car, to get them used to the different sensations of traveling. Be sure to talk to them and let them know they are doing a good job. You can try giving them treats to reward good behavior. You can gradually extend the length of the trip each time.

Here’s one of the best tips for flying with a dog or cat: To make sure a flight isn't a traumatic experience for your pet, purchase your kennel well in advance and start getting them used to being in the space. Try feeding them in the kennel for a couple weeks leading up to your trip; this will help build positive associations with being in the kennel. You can even add their bed and toys to make the space that much more comfortable.

4. Plan for the basic necessities.

Plan on stocking up on the essentials when you reach your destination so you’re not scrambling around when you arrive. We all know that the best-laid plans sometimes don’t pan out. Flights are delayed. Car problems happen. Make sure you bring enough food, water, and litter to accommodate for unforeseen hiccups.

5. Know the potential risks of your destination’s climate!

Now that you know how to prepare for your travels, it’s important to also understand the risks of your pet having too much fun in the summertime heat. Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion in dogs and cats, and signs of heat stroke and dehydration. Here are some resources for you:

Consider packing these extra items to ensure that your pets stay cool and relaxed all summer long:

  • Cooling mat:  This mat is perfect for on the go in the summer. It cools your pet as soon as they lay on it. The pressure-activated gel cool mat is activated by your pet's weight and the cooling sensation lasts for up to 3 hours.
  • Cooling vest: Once you wet and then fit the dog cooling vest to your pup, the unique microfiber fabric will get to work. It absorbs and draws the excess heat out of your dog.
  • Portable Water Dispenser: Keeping your pets hydrated in the summer is key! This easy-to-use, compact water dispenser is perfect for on the go adventures this summer.

Everyone at GlobalVetLink wishes you plenty of fun and new adventures this summer! We hope that having your best friend along with you makes it all the better!
